Boutique firm scales-up profitably with Free Range Lawyers

Early in 2019, a boutique firm based in Australia approached Free Range Lawyers to add resource and skills to their offering.  The firm, itself only a few years old, advises financial services organisations on a fixed fee basis, by providing bespoke advice as well as packages to help smaller regulated businesses manage key issues themselves.  It had seen rapid growth since establishment and needed help to meet demand.  This is where Free Range Lawyers came in.

We linked the firm to two lawyers: a corporate/commercial lawyer to work on areas outside the firm's core expertise and a financial services regulation lawyer to help the existing team with core advisory work.  Both lawyers had previous "big firm" and in-house experience and provided the advice remotely: the corporate/commercial lawyer from overseas, where he is living temporarily due to his wife's job and the financial services lawyer from rural NSW.

The assignment works well for the lawyers, with the corporate/commercial lawyer commenting that "at first, we entered into an 'ad-hoc' arrangement but that quickly moved to one of minimum/maximum hours.  The firm is happy because this minimum/maximum arrangement comes at a lower price than ad-hoc work and I am happy because I can have a base level of workflow, which helps me manage my other commitments.  I can do it from my base abroad, so I've been able to continue my career while travelling."

The firm are positive about the arrangement, with the General Manager noting "We got what we needed when we needed it.  We'd been so successful that demand had gone through the roof and, rather than turn work away, we engaged Free Range lawyers to help complete it in a way that retained profits for us"

"It has been an easy process" she comments, "the lawyers are good to deal with and their work has been high quality.  We often work outside the office ourselves, so the fact that these lawyers operate remotely made absolutely no difference to us.  All that matters is that Free Range Lawyers enabled our small firm to scale-up and make money from work that we would otherwise have had to refer or turn away."

Using Free Range Lawyers to deliver a refreshing legal service

Our client is a new Australian law firm that delivers outsourced legal services to corporate in-house teams in a refreshing and innovative way, through a network of external counsel and value pricing.  When their business started to grow, they engaged with Free Range Lawyers to provide them with skilled resource on a flexible basis, as and when their client required.

Our Free Range lawyer hit it off with the firm's founders straight away and was quickly deployed to provide employment advice to a major corporate client as part of the firm's innovative package.

"We knew we wanted to grow differently and creatively", says one of the firm's directors "and Free Range Lawyers fits the bill.  "We get access to lawyers who are great at what they do but are real, approachable people at the same time, which is important to our brand.  We pay for their services when our clients give us work, so we're growing sensibly and in a cost effective way.  It's working really well so far and our Free Range Lawyer has quickly become part of the team."
